PRODUCT & CARE

Bumpnest Vs Others (what makes us different?)

Choosing the right pregnancy pillow is one of the most impactful decisions you can make for your sleep and comfort throughout pregnancy, and not all maternity pillows are created equal.

Most pregnancy pillows on the Australian market are bulky, one-size-fits-all designs that take over the bed and can't adapt as your bump grows. The Bumpnest maternity pillow is different. Our unique 3-piece adjustable design is the only pregnancy pillow in Australia that truly grows with you, providing customised support for your belly, back, and hips at every stage, from the first trimester all the way through to your due date.

Here's what sets Bumpnest apart from other maternity pillows:

  • The only 3-piece adjustable maternity pillow in Australia with a GOTS certified organic cotton cover, so you get adaptable support and a material you can actually trust against your skin
  • Use each piece independently or together, unlike fixed U-shape and C-shape pillows that can't adapt to your changing body
  • Dial in exactly the support you need week by week as your bump grows
  • Every fabric and filling is GOTS and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified, independently tested and free from harmful substances
  • Works as a pregnancy support pillow, breastfeeding pillow, and postpartum recovery aid — lasting value beyond pregnancy
  • We cut out the middleman so you get a premium Australian maternity pillow at a fair price

With five-star reviews from Australian mums, Bumpnest is trusted as a superior alternative to traditional C-shape and U-shape pregnancy body pillows.

Care Instructions - Maternity Pillow & Baby Pod

Keeping your Bumpnest products fresh is simple with the right care routine. Regular washing helps maintain the softness, shape, and support that makes your maternity pillow so effective throughout pregnancy.

Bumpnest Maternity Pillow — Washing Instructions:

  • Remove the outer covers and machine wash on a gentle cold cycle using mild, fragrance-free detergent
  • Tumble dry on low heat, or lay flat to air dry, this preserves the loft of the microfibre filling
  • The inner pillow inserts are spot-clean only, use a damp cloth with mild soap and allow to fully air dry before reassembling
  • Do not bleach, iron, or dry clean
  • Reassemble gently and adjust the strap after washing to restore your preferred shape and support level

Bumpnest Baby Pod — Washing Instructions:

  • Remove and machine wash the outer cover on a gentle cold cycle
  • The inner foam insert is spot-clean only, wipe with a damp cloth and air dry completely before replacing the cover
  • Do not machine wash the inner foam insert

We recommend washing covers every 2-3 weeks during regular use. For the full care guide including tips for maintaining your pillow postpartum, visit our dedicated Care Instructions page.

What Stage In My Pregnancy Should I Buy A Pregnancy Pillow?

Many pregnant women wonder when the right time to start using a pregnancy pillow actually is. The honest answer: there's no wrong time, and earlier is almost always better.

You can start using the Bumpnest maternity pillow from your very first trimester. Even before your bump is showing, pregnancy hormones cause your ligaments and joints to loosen, which can lead to lower back pain, hip discomfort, and disrupted sleep from as early as 6–8 weeks.

A trimester-by-trimester guide:

  •  Use the back support cushion to ease early lower back soreness and begin training your body into side-sleeping
  •  As your bump grows, add the belly support piece to cradle your bump and relieve pressure on your hips and pelvis
  •  Use all three pieces together for full belly, back, and hip support, ideal for managing round ligament pain.

Most Australian mums start using a maternity pillow around 18–20 weeks when bump growth accelerates and sleep disruptions become more frequent. However, if you're experiencing back pain or discomfort at any point, there's no reason to wait. The 3-piece design adapts to you at every stage.

Is the Maternity Pillow Safe For Front Sleepers?

If you're a natural front or stomach sleeper, pregnancy can feel like a difficult transition, and the Bumpnest maternity pillow is specifically designed to help make it as comfortable as possible.

Front sleeping is generally not recommended after the first trimester, as a growing bump puts pressure on your uterus and major blood vessels. Most healthcare providers recommend sleeping on your left or right side, which supports healthy circulation to your baby and reduces swelling in your legs.

How Bumpnest helps front sleepers transition:

  • The back support cushion provides firm, reassuring support that naturally prevents rolling onto your back or stomach during sleep
  • The front belly cushion gives stomach sleepers the gentle downward pressure sensation they're accustomed to, without the risk
  • The adjustable strap creates a secure, cradled position that many former front sleepers describe as the first truly comfortable side-sleeping experience they've had during pregnancy

Thousands of Australian mums who were lifelong stomach sleepers have found the Bumpnest design to be the most effective pregnancy pillow for making the transition to side sleeping. If you have specific concerns about your sleep position during pregnancy, we always recommend speaking with your midwife or OB

As with any pregnancy product, if you have specific health conditions or pregnancy complications, we recommend checking with your midwife or doctor before use.

What Materials Are Used For The Maternity Pillow?

We believe what goes into your pregnancy pillow matters just as much as how it performs. Every material in the Bumpnest maternity pillow has been carefully selected for safety, comfort, and breathability.

Outer Cover:

  • Organic cotton sourced from a GOTS certified supply chain, soft, breathable, and gentle on sensitive pregnancy skin
  • Designed to stay cool through the night

All materials are selected to be breathable and temperature-regulating, helping you stay comfortable through every stage of pregnancy, including the third trimester when body temperature naturally rises.

What Certifications Do Bumpnest Products Have?

Both the Bumpnest Maternity Pillow and the Bumpnest Baby Pod are made with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified materials, one of the world's most rigorous textile safety certifications.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 means every single component, including all fabrics, threads, fillings, and accessories, has been independently tested by the Hohenstein Institute (an accredited OEKO-TEX partner laboratory) and verified to be free from:

  • Harmful chemicals and pesticides
  • Heavy metals including lead and cadmium
  • Formaldehyde and allergenic dyes
  • pH levels outside the safe range for skin contact
  • Over 100 other regulated substances

Both products also feature an organic cotton outer cover, adding another layer of natural safety alongside the OEKO-TEX certified fillings and components.

For pregnant women and newborns, whose skin is more permeable and sensitive than that of adults, this certification provides genuine assurance that the products they are spending extended time with are toxin-free and safe.

For pregnant women and newborns, that is not a small thing. Bumpnest products meet one of the highest textile safety standards in the world.

Is the Baby Pod Suitable for a newborn?

Yes, the Bumpnest Baby Pod is designed from birth and is ideal for newborns from their very first days home from hospital.

The Baby Pod's snug, contoured sides create a cosy, womb-like environment that newborns find naturally calming. The soft supportive base is perfect for supervised use across a range of everyday activities.

What you can use the Bumpnest Baby Pod for from birth:

  • Newborn settling and calming, the enclosed sides help reduce the startle reflex and create a secure space
  • Supervised daytime rest, a safe spot to lay your baby while awake and you're nearby
  • Tummy time, the gently elevated sides support your baby's chest and arms, making tummy time more comfortable from an early age
  • Floor play and lounging, a safe, padded surface for early play milestones
  • During and after feeds, the slight incline can provide comfort during winding and settling

The Baby Pod is suitable from birth up to approximately 12 months, depending on your baby's size and developmental stage. Once your baby begins to roll, sit, or pull up independently, it is time to transition them out of the pod. Always supervise use at all stages

MATERNITY PILLOW

Can I Use a Pregnancy Pillow if I'm Not Pregnant?

Absolutely, the Bumpnest maternity pillow is not just for pregnancy, and many of our customers use it long before they conceive or continue using it for years after birth.

Great reasons to use the Bumpnest pillow when you're not pregnant:

  • If you're a natural side sleeper who struggles with hip or shoulder discomfort, the body pillow provides the hip and lumbar support that a standard pillow simply can't offer
  • The supportive cushioning helps maintain spinal alignment throughout the night, reducing morning stiffness and lower back soreness
  • The pillow is ideal for supporting your body as it recovers after birth, including relief from postpartum back pain and hip joint looseness caused by relaxin hormones, which can remain in your system for months after delivery
  • The front cushion provides an excellent arm and baby support surface during feeding sessions, reducing strain on your back, shoulders, and wrists
  • Many people simply find sleeping with a supportive body pillow more comfortable and restful

The Bumpnest 3-piece adjustable design is particularly well-suited for non-pregnant use because each piece can be used independently, giving you just the support you need without the full bulk of a traditional U-shape pregnancy pillow.

Can I Use My Pregnancy Pillow for Breastfeeding or Nursing?

Yes, one of the things our customers love most about the Bumpnest maternity pillow is that its usefulness doesn't end at birth. The 3-piece design doubles as an excellent breastfeeding and nursing support pillow in the weeks and months after your baby arrives.

How to use your Bumpnest for breastfeeding:

  • Position the front belly cushion across your lap to create a firm, comfortable surface for your baby to rest on during feeds
  • Use the back support cushion behind you for lumbar and postural support during long feeding sessions — this reduces the shoulder hunching and upper back strain that many new mums experience
  • Combine both cushions for full-body support whether you're sitting up in bed, on the couch, or in a nursing chair

Proper support during breastfeeding is important not just for your baby's latch and comfort, but for preventing the neck, shoulder, and upper back pain that commonly develops from leaning forward during feeds. The Bumpnest design helps keep you in an upright, supported position that supports a healthy latch and a more comfortable feeding experience for both mum and baby.

This is one of the reasons the Bumpnest Bump & Bub Bundle represents such strong value, you get both the maternity pillow and Baby Pod, covering you from pregnancy through to the first year of your baby's life.

What Is the Difference Between a U-Shape, C-Shape, and 3-Piece Pregnancy Pillow?

When shopping for a pregnancy pillow, you'll quickly encounter several different shapes and designs, and the differences between them matter more than most people expect. Here's a straightforward breakdown:

U-Shape Pregnancy Pillow:

  • Wraps around both sides of your body simultaneously
  • Supports your back AND front at the same time
  • Ideal for women who want full-body coverage, but very large and takes up a significant amount of bed space
  • Can make it difficult to switch sides during the night without repositioning the entire pillow
  • Fixed shape, cannot be customised or adjusted as your bump grows

C-Shape Pregnancy Pillow:

  • Curved pillow that supports either the front or back at any one time
  • More compact than a U-shape but still a large, fixed-form pillow
  • Less versatile, cannot be reconfigured as your needs change through pregnancy
  • Limited functionality beyond pregnancy

Bumpnest 3-Piece Adjustable Pregnancy Pillow:

  • Modular design with three separate, connectable pieces
  • Each piece can be used independently or combined for full support
  • Adjustable strap system means you can customise the fit and support level as your bump grows, no other Australian maternity pillow offers this
  • Smaller individual footprint means it takes less bed space than U or C-shape options
  • Fully multifunctional: use as a pregnancy support pillow, breastfeeding pillow, or postpartum body pillow

For most Australian mums, the 3-piece adjustable design offers the best combination of targeted support, adaptability, and long-term value. It's why Bumpnest is rated 4.9/5 stars from Australian women.

Can a Pregnancy Pillow Help With Back Pain During Pregnancy?

Yes, relieving back pain is one of the primary reasons Australian women buy the Bumpnest maternity pillow, and it's one of the most effective tools available for managing pregnancy-related back discomfort without medication.

Back pain during pregnancy is extremely common. In fact, studies suggest up to 80% of pregnant women experience lower back pain at some point, particularly during the second and third trimesters. The primary causes include postural changes, the growing weight of the bump shifting your centre of gravity, and the effects of relaxin (a hormone that loosens ligaments and joints).

How the Bumpnest maternity pillow helps with back pain:

  •  The back support cushion keeps your spine in a neutral, aligned position throughout the night, reducing morning stiffness and pain
  •  Supporting the pelvis and reducing the 'sinking' effect that occurs when sleeping on a standard mattress without support
  •  Distributing your body weight more evenly across your hip, waist, and shoulder, reducing pressure points that lead to pain
  •  The supportive back cushion gently prevents rolling onto your back, which can exacerbate lower back pain in late pregnancy

If your back pain is severe or persistent, we always recommend consulting your GP, midwife, or physiotherapist. A Bumpnest maternity pillow is a supportive tool, not a medical device, but many Australian mums report significant improvement in sleep quality and back pain levels after beginning to use it.

Is A Maternity Pillow Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes, the Bumpnest maternity pillow is completely safe to use throughout all three trimesters of pregnancy and is designed with both mum and baby's wellbeing in mind.

Why the Bumpnest maternity pillow is a safe choice during pregnancy:

  •  Every material, fabric, and filling has been independently tested and verified free from harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and toxic substances
  •  The 3-piece design encourages the left or right side sleeping position recommended by healthcare professionals
  • The soft polyester cover allows airflow to prevent the overheating that can occur with memory foam or latex pillows
  •  The microfibre ball filling is free from latex, feathers, and common allergens

As with any pregnancy product, if you have specific health conditions or pregnancy complications, we recommend checking with your midwife or doctor before use.

Is It Safe to Sleep on My Back During Pregnancy?

This is one of the most common questions during pregnancy, and it's an important one to get right. Here's what Australian healthcare providers and research tell us:

First Trimester (weeks 1–12):

Back sleeping is generally considered safe in early pregnancy. Your uterus is still small and doesn't put significant pressure on blood vessels.

Second Trimester onwards (weeks 13+):

As your bump grows, lying flat on your back can cause the weight of your uterus to press on your vena cava, the major vein that returns blood from your lower body to your heart. This can reduce blood flow to both you and your baby, causing dizziness, breathlessness, and in some cases, reduced blood flow to the placenta.

Most Australian midwives and obstetricians recommend sleeping on your left or right side from around 20–28 weeks. The left side is often preferred as it optimises blood circulation to the baby and kidneys.

How the Bumpnest helps:

The Bumpnest back support cushion is specifically designed to prevent you from rolling onto your back during sleep without you realising. Many pregnant women, particularly deep sleepers, unconsciously roll during the night. The supportive back cushion creates a firm, comfortable barrier that encourages side sleeping throughout the night.

Always consult your midwife or doctor: This information is general in nature. If you have concerns about sleep position, blood pressure, or circulation during pregnancy, always speak with your healthcare provider for personalised advice.

Can a Pregnancy Pillow Help With Pregnancy Insomnia?

Pregnancy insomnia affects up to 78% of pregnant women at some point, and it's one of the most frustrating and exhausting parts of growing a baby. While a pregnancy pillow can't fix every cause of sleeplessness during pregnancy, it addresses several of the most common physical contributors.

Common physical causes of pregnancy insomnia that Bumpnest can help with:

  • The 3-piece design cradles your bump, back, and hips, making it significantly easier to find and hold a comfortable position throughout the night
  • The supportive cushioning reduces the pressure points and misalignment that cause many pregnant women to wake in pain during the night
  • The back support cushion prevents unconscious rolling, which can cause discomfort and wake you up
  • Many pregnant women avoid side sleeping because their hip becomes sore from pressure on the mattress; the pillow distributes body weight and reduces this discomfort significantly

Other tips for better sleep during pregnancy:

  • Maintain a consistent sleep and wake time to regulate your body clock
  • Reduce screen time in the 60 minutes before bed
  • Keep your bedroom cool, body temperature rises during pregnancy and overheating disrupts sleep
  • Consider a short nap (20–30 minutes) in the afternoon rather than sleeping in late, which can disrupt nighttime sleep

If pregnancy insomnia is significantly impacting your quality of life, we recommend speaking with your midwife or GP, as there are additional strategies and supports available.

Is a Pregnancy Pillow Worth It?

If you're wondering whether a pregnancy pillow is worth the investment, the honest answer, based on the experiences of over 7,000 Australian mums, is a resounding yes. But let's break it down so you can decide for yourself.

A pregnancy pillow is absolutely worth it if you:

  • Are struggling to find a comfortable sleep position as your bump grows
  • Experience lower back pain, hip pain, sciatica, or pelvic discomfort
